Advising
STARS has an open door to
advising, so prospective, new and continuing students can drop in anytime the center is open to receive assistance from a peer adviser or a professional staff person. With years of experience at the university, advisers are able to answer many questions and make referrals. Conveniently, STARS has two centers--STARS at the ARCenter and STARS at Kresge.

Academic Skills Workshops
STARS offers two days of workshops to transfer students entering UCSC who would like to ensure a successful transition to the university. Workshop topics include: Getting the Most from UCSC Advising, Managing the Quarter's Fast Pace, Critical Thinking and Analysis, Making Your Major Work for You, Effective Reading and Writing Strategies in Your Discipline, Understanding University Culture, Completing the Transfer Process, Using the Library for Academic Research, Off-Campus Internship and Study Opportunities, Thinking About Graduate School, Writing the Research Paper, and a Transfer and Re-entry Student Panel.

Understanding University Culture and Academic Skills
Two unit course and topical seminars introduce students to university culture, educational opportunities, and effective academic reading, writing and research strategies.

Computer Work Stations
STARS at the ARCenter and at Kresge have small computer labs as well as being wireless accessible so you can bring your laptop or use our computers to check your email, surf the net, or type and print a paper.

Learning Communities
STARS coordinates study groups focused in such areas as biology and literature.

Faculty Connections
These informal STARS sponsored events provide opportunities for students to make connections with faculty and gain insight into how to make the most of their undergraduate education.

Tutoring
STARS students regularly make the most of their academic challenges by participating in the Learning Support Services tutoring program.

Writing and Research Intensive for Transfer Excellence (WRITE)
The WRITE program offers you the opportunity to meet with a peer mentor to enhance your academic writing skills, gain confidence in your writing, and receive assistance in researching your paper. You will work with your peer mentor one-on-one in weekly meetings. If you'd like to participate in WRITE, please contact Sally Lester at sal@ucsc.edu or come by STARS at the ARCenter, Room 216A.

STARS and Learning Support Services End of the Quarter Study Nights at the ARCenter
During every finals week, evening review sessions for specific classes and general writing tutors will be available at the ARCenter second floor Learning Center.
