Santa Cruz County Veteran Advocate

The Veteran Advocate is intended to assist in meeting the needs of our community veterans. The Veteran Advocate will serve as a link between federal resources through the Veterans Administration, County-based resources and community-based veterans service organizations. The Veteran Advocate will outreach veterans and the families in need of support, and provide face-to-face engagement and a "warm hand-off" to various service organizations.

I am pleased to have this opportunity as the new Veteran Advocate. I served four years in the United States Army and had one tour of duty in Iraq. As a combat veteran, I understand the challenges faced by veterans and their families. Knowing first-hand the challenges faced by veterans will enable me to better assist and serve veterans of all types. As the Veteran Advocate, it is my duty to see that veterans receive the best care and are referred to the proper resource that will meet their unique needs.

Services Provided:

Individual Based Care
Linkages to government benefit organizations, county resources, community-based
Linkages to Veterans resources including the Veterans Administration through community -based Veteran service organizations
Assisting disabled veterans and their families
Assisting veterans with substance abuse issues
Assisting homeless veterans
Employment issues
Referrals to mental health services
Assisting veterans with "bad-conduct" or "other than honorable discharge" matters

Available for transfer and re-entry students through a collaboration between STARS and Learning Support Services. Tutor sign ups will be available online, or come by STARS at 216A Academic Resources Center.

The WRITE program offers you writing assistance on a consistent basis throughout the quarter. You will work individually with a peer writing mentor in researching your papers to help you gain confidence and new skills in writing at the university level.

Research Project Centered Around US Military Veterans and Higher Education

Greetings student veterans! My name is Katherine VanRenselaar. I am a former military wife and a student in anthropology at UCSC. I am working on a research project centered on US military veterans and higher education. I am particularly interested in veterans and military dependents currently connected to UCSC. Any aspect of your experiences will be most helpful to my research. Student Veterans Health Group

Feeling physically healthy, having sufficient sleep and a clear and fresh mind? If any of these are goals that you want to advance, then consider joining the Student Veterans Health Group.

We'll meet to.

Increase and sustain motivation
Identify which personal stressors can be modified
Advance skills of coping with inevitable stress in a positive way
Give and receive support from other student veterans

We will meet for 6 weeks in a confidential setting facilitated by campus mental health professional- Dr. LJ Geiken. There is no fee for this resource. Contact Dani Molina at (831) 459-1520 or dmolina2@ucsc.edu to indicate your interest and provide your schedule for possible a.m. meeting times this upcoming Spring quarter.

The Role of Culture on Psychological Resiliency Study
